4 Ways to Prevent Clogged Drains

When it comes to the health of your plumbing, preventative maintenance is the key. Whether it has to do with your Los Angeles home or place of business, a plumbing problem can bring things screeching to a halt.

How To Prevent Drain Clogs

As one of Los Angeles’ premier plumbing and sewer company, we’d like to offer 4 simple steps to ensure peak plumbing performance throughout the year. By following these tips, you’ll save time, avoid costly service calls, and extend the life of your system for years to come.

  1. Be careful what you flush down the toilet. Certain items, such as feminine hygiene products, cotton swabs, or cotton balls, should never be flushed as they won’t break down and will clog up your pipes.
  2. Install an inexpensive hair catcher. Place the catcher over the drains in your shower and bathtub. They’ll catch anything that’s too big to disintegrate in the pipes, so you won’t have to worry about using chemicals, which will inevitably eat through your plumbing system.
  3. Have your pipes insulated. If the temperature drops below freezing, your pipes can freeze, but by using pipe insulation sleeves you can protect them. Just cut and wrap the sleeves around the most exposed pipes. While Southern California enjoys consistently pleasant weather, there is a chance that the temperature will drop, so taking proactive steps is necessary.
  4. Avoid putting certain items down the garbage disposal. Items such as grease, bones, fibrous foods like potato peels and carrots, and foods like pasta and rice that increase in size when exposed to water, can lead to clogs and potential damage to your pipes.
